Migrate a work environment to a virtualized server

Creation of a virtual machine, setting up accounts and remote desktop, then resuming data, profiles and messaging: a migration described by the Agedis team.

Resuming a full working environment

Migrating a server is not just about copying folders. Users must also find their session, their work tools and their messaging in the new environment. In this file, the Agedis team described the operations carried out to transfer an existing environment to a virtual machine. The scope covers the Windows Server system, user accounts, remote desktop and data recovery. This report makes it possible to specify what was carried out without assuming validation of all uses by the client.

Build the system and access

The technician first confirms the creation of a virtual machine in a data center environment, then the installation of Windows Server 2019. He then indicates the creation of an Active Directory and user accounts, as well as the setup of a remote desktop server. Microsoft Office 2021 is installed in this new environment. These operations fall under systems administration: they prepare the framework within which employees will be able to open their session and use their applications. The data center here constitutes the hosting base for the virtual machine; System installation and configuration is attributed to the Agedis team.

Transfer data and profiles

The report distinguishes two occasions. Data from the old server is backed up and then restored to the new server. Accounts and profiles from the previous environment are also backed up and restored. This distinction matters in a migration project: shared files and users' personal environments do not meet the same needs. Finally, the technician mentions setting up Outlook accounts. The work described therefore combines the preparation of the server, the recovery of content and the configuration of user messaging.

Steps completed, precise validation scope

The December 2023 report confirms the operations carried out. A previous exchange also provides a follow-up element: after reported delays, the technician completed the configuration of the remote desktop and tested the modification of an Excel file. He expected an improvement, without announcing an overall recipe from the customer. This file illustrates the preparation, transfer and adjustments after migration. For a comparable project, validation must cover sessions, files, applications and messaging, in order to distinguish technical implementation from acceptance of uses.
