A system used for counting had to return to operation before evolving. The NTIC responsible for Strasbourg Events and team Agedis coordinated several passages: rehabilitation, system transformation, and then control and export of the virtual machine.
Restarting operation
Repair the start of the existing machine to be able to continue the work.
Develop the system
Update, convert to virtual machine and create clone.
Control and transmit
Carry out the technical inspection, export the machine and reconcile interventions with customer follow-up.
Rehabilitation and virtualization; technical inspection carried out
Reuse a tool already used
The need was for an existing Linux server, used for counting cameras. Before changing its environment, it had to be put back into service. The project therefore combined two concrete objectives: to resume the operation of this machine, then to virtualize it. For the Agedis team, the starting point was the system present at the customer and the function it fulfilled. This understanding made it possible to keep the business need at the center of the intervention, beyond just the technical transformation of the server.
Repair Startup Before Continue
The first pass, in late September 2023, focused on repairing the server boot partition. This operation constituted a distinct step in the virtualization to come. It first responded to the refurbishment of the existing machine. The project monitoring maintained this separation between the initial recovery of the system and its evolution: two linked actions, with different objectives, which took place in several passages by the technician rather than in a single operation.
Update, virtualize and export
During the next visit, the technician updated the server, converted it into a virtual machine and created a clone. A technical check, marked “OK”, accompanied these operations, before exporting the virtual machine. This step illustrates a concrete evolution of the infrastructure: taking over an existing physical server to prepare for its use in virtualized form. The control mentioned remains that of the technician over his intervention; it does not constitute a global recipe for all of the customer's uses.
Linking the interventions to the follow-up of the file
The work was spread over three passes, for a total of fourteen hours. The client's IT manager, the technician involved and the sales administration coordinated the monitoring of times and the establishment of the order form, received after the interventions. The need to put the counting cameras back into service thus remained linked to the actions carried out: startup repair, update, virtualization and export. This experience shows the system role of Agedis in taking over the existing system, while possible external reception needs can be studied separately with Cloudlab.

Preparing a destination by data center
Cloudlab can complete a future project when an external host environment is needed; the systems remain accompanied by Agedis.
